His talent was undeniable, famously qualifying his F2 car third at the 1967 German Grand Prix against more powerful Formula One machinery. This performance secured his full-time entry into Formula One, where he debuted with Cooper before being signed by Ferrari in 1968. He won his first Grand Prix that same year in the rain at Rouen, France, establishing an early reputation as a master in wet conditions.
